Direct Access

Did you know you don’t need a referral to see a physical therapist?

Not everyone is aware that if you are experiencing pain or an injury, you can go directly to your physical therapist. It makes no difference whether you’re dealing with an old or new problem. You can schedule an appointment with one of our therapists to get help as soon as possible.

Direct Access in the medical community refers to the ability to see a physical therapist whenever you want without obtaining permission from your physician or medical practitioner*. *Referrals are mandatory for Workers’ Compensation, No Fault, and after a surgurical procedure(s).

Physical therapists routinely assess and treat patients without the recommendation of a physician. You can reach us at Maccio Physical Therapy in Troy, NY, and we’ll schedule your appointment right away! Direct Access eliminates the need to waste time waiting for a doctor’s appointment, then waiting for a referral to physical therapy and another appointment with the therapist.

Another advantage of seeing your physical therapist right away is the cost savings. Beyond the cost of copayments to see your doctor, being referred to a specialist, paying another copay, and then being referred to physical therapy, you can save money by seeing our team directly.

I am headache and pain free now!

“I began physical therapy due to headaches, numbness, and neck. I was evaluated each visit, taught exercises, and had some hands-on maneuvering of my neck. It seemed to me to be a combination of physical therapy and chiropractic treatment.

I am headache and pain free now, but have exercises prescribed for if these issues come back. I am able to read and work at a computer comfortably now. I would recommend Maccio Physical Therapy and would return if necessary. Thank you.”

FAQs

Can I benefit from physical therapy treatments?

You most certainly can!

Physical therapists are experts at evaluating the whole person. This means that we seek to identify all of the factors associated with your condition. We understand the body's interconnectedness and how a problem in one area may be a symptom pointing to the source of the situation in another.

We are also adept at determining whether you are dealing with one problem or several issues affecting you and your function.

Everyone can benefit from physical therapy, but that doesn't mean it's the only thing you need. We believe in collaborating with other healthcare professionals and working with you while another practitioner assists you in getting the results you deserve.

We can discuss your options and help you decide if physical therapy is right for you. Contact us today to learn more about how PT can help you and make an appointment with one of our dedicated physical therapists.

Are physical therapy treatments painful?

Physical therapy is intended to relieve pain rather than aggravate it. Your pain levels, however, may fluctuate. Our therapists will clearly define what constitutes "normal" pain and what does not. To facilitate improvements in your overall condition, some situations necessitate exercises or actions that can elicit a pain response; however, we will reassess your overall condition after performing this activity to determine if there was a positive effect from the exercise despite it being somewhat uncomfortable to perform.

You may experience some discomfort as a result of using weakened or recovering muscles, but it should not result in a greater loss of function. We are continually re-evaluating your overall condition to determine if the exercises assigned are creating a positive effect despite also causing slight discomforts. Alternatively, due to the nature of the condition, restoring range of motion after surgery can be painful for some. Unfortunately, experiencing a temporary increase in pain may be critical to your recovery. Although it may seem counterintuitive, there are times when increased pain early on can prevent more severe pain later on. Your therapist is skilled in helping you assess the difference between ‘hurt’ from a new exercise your body is not use to versus ‘harm’ in which the exercise is actually resulting in a loss of function or worsening your overall condition.

Rest assured that we will do everything possible to reduce your pain and prevent it from worsening during your physical therapy session. Communication with our therapist will aid in the reduction of any discomfort you may experience during your physical therapy treatments.

We want you to be pain-free and back to your normal activities as soon as possible, and we will do everything we can to help limit the discomfort you may feel during the healing and treatment process.

Can I keep seeing a therapist even if I’m feeling better?

Yes, you can continue to see your physical therapist after you have completed your therapy sessions. There are several approaches to this, for example:

  • Your therapist will meet with you to go over and discuss your at-home therapy program.
  • You can re-evaluate your progress after a month to ensure you're still on track and modify your home program as needed.
  • You can make an appointment with your therapist at regular intervals (for example, every six months) to assess your progress, ensure you are not regressing, and address any new issues that have arisen.

It is also a goal of ours for you to become independent with our prevention program. If you feel you need more care beyond this, you and your therapist can have a discussion about how to best manage your long-term prevention plan so that you can have the greatest success possible.

Can my physical therapist make a diagnosis for me?

When you come in for your first session at Maccio Physical Therapy, your physical therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation that includes a detailed history and a thorough physical examination. The initial assessment determines the severity of your injury or illness and aids in determining the source of your symptoms and the factors contributing to your condition.

Physical therapists frequently collaborate with physicians to provide confirmation or potential contradictions to a diagnosis to ensure that your diagnosis is correct and your treatment plan is appropriate.
